PLEASE HELP US!
Hey guys! This is my brother, Nick, and he needs your help. Nick has Phelan-Mcdermid Syndrome. This is also known as 22Q13. This Syndrome is a rare chromosome abnormality and it affects him greatly. He is one out of about 1,100 people in the world with this condition. Although affected by this, my brother is very loving and kind. Nick is also the sweetest person I know.
Phelan-Mcdermid Syndrome can be a very hard thing to deal with. Many people with this syndrome have many of the following features:
- autism or autistic-like behavior
- delayed or absent speech
- immune deficiencies
- slow development
- very low muscle tone
- poor motor control
Unfortunately, Nick is on the lower functioning side of the spectrum. We, as a family, take care of him and help him through daily tasks. Although he is affected, he is capable of learning new things and communicating with us through actions.
Recently, my family has fallen into financial troubles and we can’t make it to the conference that is held every two years down in Florida. The conference takes place July 23-26, 2014. We still have some hope that we can make it down there in time because this trip means a lot to us. Since this syndrome is extremely rare, we hardly ever see anyone with the same circumstances. At this conference, families can learn more about this syndrome, learn about what this syndrome may bring, give or get advice from other families, and create support groups for each other.
The reason I am posting this is to raise $5000 to help my family, and more importantly, help my brother get through this syndrome. I am not looking for more tumblr followers or attention. All I ask is that you please reblog this and get the word out.
